If you’re looking for action, drama, valor, history, Jewish destiny, or simply to stimulate your mind and be in the company of other people with the same interest, then this class is for you.
This class is part of a larger series called Total Tanach.
What is the Tanach?
The word TaNaCh is a hebrew acronym (??”?) that stands for Torah (???? - the five books of Moses), Nevi’im (?????? - Prophets) and Ketuvim (?????? - Writings). This encompasses the Bible (or what non-Jews may refer to as the “Old Testament”).
Why is it important for a Jew to learn Tanach?
The Tanach encompasses the core of the Jewish religion and national identity - from the origins of the world, the forefathers, leaving Egypt, entering Israel, through the period of the kings, the destruction of the first temple, the first exile and subsequent return. Intimate knowledge of Tanach is a prerequisite for any for a Jew to be familiar with his/her history, people, and place in the world.
The Charlotte Torah Center has begun a bold program to complete the entire Tanach and we are starting with the Prophets. Why are we starting with here and not with the Torah, the most important section of the Tanach (Bible)? There’s so much out there in the form of books and the internet that deals with the Torah and the weekly Parsha (Torah portion) and many Jews have at least an elementary knowledge of it. However, the Prophets are a section that most Jews have never been exposed to. Many would be at a loss to name Jewish King (other than David or Solomon) or prophet. How many people know that Samson was a judge, not a macho man or that two Jewish kings committed suicide?
If you’re looking for action, drama, valor, history, Jewish destiny, or simply to stimulate your mind and be in the company of other people with the same interest, then this class is for you.
Is the time inconvenient for you?
No problem, many of our programs are done in private homes and we might be able to do the same for Profits from the Prophets. Get a small group—even two or three people—and give us a call; we’ll work it out.
This is a perfect time to join because we just began a few weeks ago. Our goal is to complete at least two chapters a week.
How does the program work?
Every week you will receive a list of questions to think about before the class and a link to download the two chapters for that week’s class. Some people look at the material ahead and others don’t, they simply come.
Is it a lecture?
Not really. The setting is informal and the class is interactive.
What do I need to bring?
An inquisitive mind.
Materials:
We use the Artscroll’s Rubin Edition of the Prophets: Joshua and Judges but some people use other editions and others simply download the text from a link we send. Some people don’t come with any thing.
Who comes?
Doctors, professors, entrepreneurs, pharmacists, people between jobs...Jews from all walks of life.
Ready to take the challenge?
There’s nothing to loose and everything to gain. Looking forward to seeing you.
